Over forty years ago a friend gave Doug an orchid she brought from Hawaii.  It was half dead but with his green thumb, he revived it and brought it to the Atlanta Orchid Society monthly meeting where it received a blue ribbon on the exhibition table.  Fast forward to now, and Doug is an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society ( for over 10 years )  as well as Judging Chair for the Atlanta region. He cultivates orchids in his backyard 16 X24 greenhouse as well as on windowsills and under LED lights in his basement.  He is still amazed with the variety of these wonderful plants and he is constantly learning about them.

Doug’s Topics

Orchids – My orchid died!  Why won’t my orchid flower?  How often should I water my orchid?   This and other questions will be answered in this presentation.  I have been growing and killing orchids for over 35 years and am still learning how best to grow over 400 orchids on windowsills, under LED lights or in my backyard 16X24 greenhouse.  We will discuss the four basics for successful orchid culture: water, light, air movement and basic pest control.  If you can grow African violets you can grow phalaenopsis ( moth orchids) on a suitable windowsill.   Bring your “sick” plant to the meeting , and maybe Doug can help you return it to health.
