Nestled within Chastain Park in Buckhead is a farm started by the Chastain Park Conservancy. It has 12 raised beds and 6 ground beds lined with original stones from park CCC projects funded by FDR’s administration during the Great Depression. The Conservancy’s headquarters were on the farm until a devastating 2019 fire destroyed its fun and funky WWII Quonset hut offices. (Two years post fire Atlanta provided new offices in a converted Watershed building about 1 ½ football fields away). Sadly, the farm gates are now locked except for scheduled visits.
But we are excited! The Conservancy has begun planting a large native plant garden outside the farm gates with swings and benches accessible to all park visitors (3 million annually). Ooh…. Imagine the great opportunities to educate. And passers-by intended to just take a walk!
Currently we:
- Plant and maintain several of the beds and support the board volunteers who plant the rest
- Serve as docents for farm visitors scheduled by the Conservancy to build support for the park
- Aid the operations manager who grew 1,600 plants for the park
- Host garden club meetings at the farm
- Help supervise volunteers at farm clean up days
